The ammine proton chemical shifts of a series of compounds [CoX(NH3]<I>n</I>+ have been explained quantitatively. The shifts are ascribed to the paramagnetic anisotropy of central cobalt(III) ions. The discrepancies between the calculated and the observed shift values, though small, noted for the <I>trans</I> ammine protons of complexes with X=CN− and NO2− may be caused by large inductive effects of these ligands.
