Raman spectra show that the Hg–X bond strengths in mercury (II) halides are remarkably weakened by the interaction with certain solvents. Relations between the degree of this weakening and (a) the Lewis basicity (Gutmann's donor number) of the solvent and (b) the ionic character of the Hg–X bond are pointed out, together with a simple explanation.
