Surface acidities and acid strength distributions of amorphous silica–alumina, Y-type faujasite and mordenite have been examined by measuring the differential heats of adsorption of ammonia. The number of acid sites with adsorption heats higher than 70 kJ/mol increased in the order: NH<SUB>4</SUB>Y>NH<SUB>4</SUB>M>RENH<SUB>4</SUB>Y>silica–alumina. On the other hand, the order of the acid strength was: NH<SUB>4</SUB>M>RENH<SUB>4</SUB>Y>silica–alumina>NH<SUB>4</SUB>Y. The high catalytic activities of zeolites for cumene cracking and toluene disproportionation were correlated with acid strength, Bronsted acidity, and electrostatic effect.
