The relationship between 13 kinds of serum protein concentrations and thyroid functions (BMR, T3 RSU, T4 and cholesterol) were investigated by means of multivariate analysis. 13 kinds of serum proteins - prealbumin (Pre), albumin (Alb), α1, acidglycoprotein (α1 AG), α1 antitrypsin (α1 AT), α2 HS glycoprotein (α2 HS), ceruloplasmin (Cp), haptoglobin (Hp), α2 macroglobulin (α2 Mc), β1 C/A globulin (C3), transferrin (Tf), IgG, IgA and IgM - were measured by a single radial immunodiffusion method in 25 control subject cases and 28 cases of hyperthyroidism.<BR>The results obtained are the following : <BR>1. Pre and Tf were significantly decreased and Alb was slightly decreased, but α1 AT, Cp, C3 and IgG were significantly increased in patients with hyperthyroidism in comparison with control subjects.<BR>2. Discriminative functions were devised to distinguish between control subjects and patients with hyperthyroidism by means of the parameters of 5, 8 and 13 kinds of serum proteins. The discriminative ratio which made use of the parameters of the 13 kinds of serum protein concentrations was 82.2%. As the numbers of the parameters were decreased to 5 kinds of serum proteins (Pre, Alb, α1 AT, Cp and Tf), this ratio was not markedly lowered (78.5%).<BR>3. In the simple correlation between concentrations of the 13 serum proteins and thyroid functions, Pre was negatively correlated with T3 RSU and T4, and Alb negatively correlated with T3 RSU. α1 AT was positively correlated with BMR and T4, and Cp positively correlated with T3 RSU and T4 respectively.<BR>4. The partial correlation coefficients (PCC's) of the respective parameters representing the 13 kinds of serum proteins to 4 kinds of thyroid functions were estimated, and those of Pre, Alb, α1 AT, α2 Mc, α2 HS and IgM were highly correlated with the respective parameters representing thyroid functions. The PCC's of the respective parameters representing 4 kinds of thyroid functions to the 13 kinds of serum proteins were estimated. The PCC of T3 RSU was highly correlated with Pre, α1 AG and Cp; T4 correlated with Pre and IgM; and that of cholesterol correlated with α1 AG. However, the PCC's of BMR to various kinds of serum proteins were lowered.<BR>5. The multiple correlation coefficients (MCC's) of all the parameters representing 4 kinds of thyroid functions to the 13 kinds of serum proteins were estimated, and those of Pre, Al>b, α1 AT, α2 HS, Cp, α2 Mc and IgM were highly correlated with these thyroid functions. The MCC's of all the parameters representing the 13 kinds of serum proteins to 4 kinds of thyroid functions were estimated; the MCC of T3 RSU and T4 indicating thyroid hormone were significantly proportionally higher than that of BMR and cholesterol.<BR>6. The simple correlation of each of the 13 kinds of serum protein concentrations was estimated. It was indicated that Pre was positively correlated with Alb, Alb correlated with Tf, and α1 AT was positively correlated with α2 HS, Cp, α2 Mc, IgG, IgA and IgM respectively. α2 Mc was positively correlated with C3 IgG, IgA and IgM, and C3 was correlated with IgG and IgM. IgG was positively correlated with IgA and IgM, and IgA correlated with IgM. 7. The important factors which referred to the pattern representing the 13 kinds of serum proteins in patients with hyperthyroidism were investigated by means of principle component analysis.
