Prof. Okamoto and his co-workers have found that in the offspring of rabbits descended from ancestors made diabetic by the administration of alloxan for several successive generations the β-cells in the Langerhans' islets of the pancreas suffered from hypoplasia which has been aggravated as the generation went down from F1 to F4 and F5, and that F4 and F5 showed the spontaneous occurrence of diabetes mellitus. In these rabbits the Langerhans' islet showed a picture which resembled the islets of human diabetes. Certain histological changes also were observed in the adrenal cortex and in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland which secretes the hormones which take part in the carbo-hydrate metabolism.<BR>The author of this paper studied the urinary output of gonadotrophin in the above-mentioned rabbits according to the method presented by Crooke & Butt. The results obtained by comparing spontaneous diabetic rabbits with normal control rabbits and alloxan diabetic rabbits are in summary as follows : <BR>(1) The offspring of rabbits descended from ancestors diabetic for successive generations showed an increase in the amount of urinary FSH as well as LH. F5 rabbits especially twice as much increase as normal controls in the amount of urinary gonadotrophin.<BR>(2) In the spontaneous diabetic rabbits (F5) the urinary content of FSH was always twice as much as that of normal controls from the 50 days after birth onwards. On the other hand, urinary LH was twice as much as normal controls from the 130 days after birth.<BR>(3) The spontaneous diabetic rabbits, in which diabetes occurred for long period, showed an extreme increase in the amount of urinary gonadotrophin, and a slightly higher value than spontaneous diabetic rabbits (F1).<BR>(4) The urinary gonadotrophin level of rabbits made diabetic with alloxan rose temporarily during 10 days following the administration of alloxan, then dropped to normal value during the 20 to 30 days after period, and finally dropped to subnormal about the 90th day.<BR>The above mentioned results obtained by measurement of urinary gonadotrophin lead us to infer that there is a difference in the secretion of pituitary gonadotrophin between the offspring descended from rabbits diabetic for several consecutive generations and alloxan diabetic rabbits.
