It has been stated that hyperfunction of pituitary-adrenal system often exists in diabetes mellitus. Such hyperfunction of pituitary-adrenal system may be expected to aggravate the metabolic disturbance in diabetes mellitus. Therefore, in the present study, the relation between the urinary excretion of of steroid hormones and types of disease, complications and other metabolic abnormalities were studied, and following results were obtained :
1) Urinary cxcretion of 17-OHCS was found to be increased in aged diabetics in comparison with that in aged non-diabetics. Urinary 17-OHCS was also increased in young diabetics showing increased urinary excretion of ketone bodies.
2) The urinary excretion of 17-OHCS was in generally parellel to the urinary amount of ketone bodies. 17 KS was increased in diabetics with ketosis.
3) There was no correlation between the urinary excretion of steroid hormones and fasting blood sugar level.
4) No correlation was found between the urinary excretion of steroid hormones and the severity or type of complication.
5) The metabolic significance of the increased urinary excretion of 17-OHCS in aged diabetics was discussed.
