The following experiments were carried out in dogs in order to investigate the preservation at a low temperature of the kidney for transplantation. The kidney was transplanted back to the host and the time limit of the preservation of the kidney at a low temperature was studied.
1) Four different solutions were investigated as washing solutions of the kidney which are necessary for the transplantation and the preparation for the kidney preservation. The dissected kidney was out washed with one of the solutions and the renal artery and vein of the dissected kidney and the femoral artery and vein of the host were connected with a polyethylene tube. Extra-corporeal circulation of the dissected kidney was carried out for 6 hours. The renal blood flow, the amount of the excreted urine and osmotic pressure of the urine were measured. Histological examination of the kidney after the extra-corporeal circulation was also carried out.
2) Time course of the oxygen uptake of the kidney was followed employing Warburg manometer in three groups of kidneys-1) preserved at room temperature, 2) preserved at 4°C, and 3) preserved at -20°C.
3) The kidney which had been kept at 4°C was autografted to the iliac fossa, and the incidence of the successful transplantation was assessed.
