In dogs, minute structure of anoxic myocardium was studied in chronological sequence under normal temperature under anonic arrest, and its reversibility was discussed. Changes in electron microscopic picture were studied upon combined use of mild hypothermia and after release of aortic blood flow under normal temperature.
1) The limit of anoxic arrest under normal temperature appears to be present approximately 50 minutes with marked nuclear and myofibrillar changes in the ultrastructure. In view of the changes after release of the block, some reduction in time should be considered.
2) More pronounced changes are noted in the heart under fibrillation than in the beating heart.
3) Even in beating heart, intense changes were noted more than in the fibrillating heart without insertion of a left ventricular vent.
4) Scarcely any difference was noted between normal temperature and mild hypothemia (esophageal temperature, 33-34°C) . In moderate hypothemia (esophageal temperature 29-31°C), the changes were definitely milder.
5) Up to 2 hours after the release of the aortic block under normal temperature, findings in chronological sequence showed some tendency towards aggravation.
