Breeding habits of Japanese long-legged whiskered bats, Myotis frater kaguyae were studied on the basis of a maternity colony consisted of 59 adult females and 90 young, collected on 19 July, 1980 in the Kamikawa shrine, Asahikawa City, Hokkaido. Collected specimens from the colony were 22 parturition females, seven pregnant females, 30 non-pregnant adult females, and 90 various sized young (Tables 1 and 2) . This maternity colony is seemed to have been composed of about 150 adult females. The parturition period is suggested to continue from the middle of June to the late of July. It is seemed that females begin to copulate at one year and 3-4 months of age, and have a child at two years of age. The litter size was one. The female young was a little more than the male (54.60%) . The measurements of external characters in the new-born young and the comparisons with those of the adult female were shown in Table 3. At birth, the pinnae and tragi of young were erect, and the eye-lids were sealed. But the eyes opened in all young of having forearm length of more than 19.0 mm. The deciduous teeth was 2.1.2/3.1.2 All teeth except the posterior one of the upper premolar erupted over the mucosa at birth. On the other hand, in all young of having forearm length of more than 22.0 mm, the deciduous tooth erupted. At birth, the young had vibrissae of 0.5 mm and hairs of 0.5-0.8 mm sparsely on the inner surface and anterior margin of pinnae. On the other hand, there was no hair on the parietal and facial parts. In body, the new-born young had hairs of 0.2-1.0 mm scatteredly on the various parts except the ventral part of body and the almost of wing. The body hairs began to grow thickly in the young of having forearm length of 19.0 mm. And the growing preceded more in the parietal and cervical regions and the dorsal side of body than in the ventral side.
