Two Cases of Atypical Carcinoid Tumor of the Larynx

We report herein 2 cases of atypical carcinoid tumor of the larynx. One case involved supraglottic atypical carcinoid tumor (stage T2N0). Supraglottic partial laryngectomy was performed and the primary lesion was well controlled. However, the patient developed postoperative lymph node metastasis to the neck, which was controlled by following neck dissection. There was no evidence of disease 7 months after neck dissection. The other case involved recurrent atypical carcinoid tumor of the larynx after partial laryngectomy. We performed additional and wider partial laryngectomy. Locoregional control was good, but the patient died of distant metastases. A review of reported cases in Japan, including the present cases, suggested that partial laryngectomy with a suitable safety margin is optimal for most cases with early-stage laryngeal carcinoid.
