A new dynamic equilibrium test of the step-rotation method was devised to determine the labyrinthine function during programmed movement.This method consisted of a combination of one-four rotation and steppings. Each active rotation was performed in two steps; 90° rotation was made with the first step in I-V method, with the second step in method VI.Rotation and stepping were designed in the following manner:1) Method I-IV (90°-360°)1-, 1-2-, 1234, 5678×4 times1-2-3-, 1-2-3-4-, 2) Method V (Combined)(1-, 12345678)-(1-2-, 12345678)-(1-2-3-, 12345678)-(1-2-3-4-, 12345678)3) Method VI (Rhythm)(1234) (1234) (----)×12-16 times=rotation1) Latent deviation often appears more clearly with these programmed movements.2) Effects of active rotation are somewhat different from those of passive rotation, as there are prolonged rotatory after-effects.3) Even in cases of latent labyrinthine deviation with negative results of the examination, patients often complained of a sense of difficulty with the active rotation in the direction against latent labyrinthine deviation.4) The methods of I-V may be useful for estimating the healing process of vertigo. These methods may also be used as aptitude tests for sportsmen and/or pilots.
