Audiograms and tympanograms were recorded on 35 children (66 ears) during a period of 9 years and 5 months. At the first test, the mean air conduction level of more than 41dB (moderate) and 26dB (mild) was recognized bilaterally in 6 cases (17.1%) and 17 cases (48.6%), respectively.Patients whose mean air conduction level was more than mild after 1 year had difficulty in recovering better hearing. The operation with a transtympanic ventilation tube was effective in improving the cure rate. The decision to operate with a ventilation tube should be made during the period of 3 months to a 1 year after onset of otitis media with effusion.
