Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of waste management systems is required in making decisions regarding their environmental impact. Recycling of plastic containers and packaging is no exception to this requirement. Although recycling systems sometimes participate in the complex processes of existing industries, some LCA studies have omitted these processes either partially or entirely from their system boundaries.
This study, therefore, clarifies the influence of recycling on the existing industry and discusses the influences of setting system boundaries on LCA. Concerned with the recycling of plastic containers and packaging, several cases have been supposed to include feedstock recycling in the steel industry and energy recovery by waste incineration. Processes in steel works influenced by the introduction of plastic are clarified, and system boundaries are established to include or exclude the processes. An inventory analysis was conducted based on these two system boundaries. Consequently a remarkable difference was found between the results for excluding complex processes in the existing industry and the results for including the processes.
In order to estimate the influences recycling can have on the existing industry by LCA, it is necessary to clarify the processes in the existing industry influenced by the introduction of recycled materials, and to establish a system boundary that includes these processes.
