On 170 cases of chronic gastritis in total, gastric analysis was performed by the intubation method with caffeine in 80 cases and by the intubation method with histamine (0.5mg) in the other 90 cases. All the 170 cases were subjected to examination by tubeless method of gastric analysis using Kirex (Azure A-Resin Complex) and examination with gastrocamera. A comparative study of the results of the above examination led to the following conclusions:1. In the majority of achlorhydric cases who excreted less than 0.3 mg/300 cc of azure A in the two-hour urine, gastric analysis revealed less than 30 degrees of free hydrochloric acid after administration of caffeine or histamine and the total quantity of gastric juice was less than 100cc for two hours after histamine, even if the total quantity of gastric juice was less than 100cc for two hours after histamine. The gastric output of hydrochloric acid was less than 149 mg. within two hours after histamine, even if the total quantity of gastric juice was more than 100cc.2. In the majority of the cases with gastric acid who excreted more than 0.6mg/300cc of azure A in the two-hour urine, gastric analysis revealed more than 31 degrees of free hydrochloric acid, the total quantity of gastric juice was more than 100cc and the gastric output of hydrochloric acid was more than 150mg. within two hours after histamine.3. In about one-half of borderline cases in whom the excretion of azure A varied from 0.3 to 0.6 mg/300cc in the two-hour urine, gastric analysis revealed more than 31 degrees of free hydrochloric acid and the gastric output of hydrochloric acid was more than 150 mg. for two hours after histamine. In the other half of borderline cases, gastric analysis revealed less than 30 degrees of free hydrochloric acid, and the gastric output of hydrochloric acid was less than 149 mg for two hours after histamine.4. No significant relationship could be established between the results by the tubeless method with Kirex and the gastric acidity by the intubation method with caffeine.5. The tubeless gastric analysis with Kirex is not suitable for the quantitative measurement of hydrochloric acid secretion.6. A certain relationship was established among the results by the tubeless method with Kirex and by the intubation method with histamine and findings obtained with the gastrocamera.
