Follow-up study on operated cases of depression fractures of the tibial condyle.

Nineteen tibial condylar fractures with more than 5mm depression have been operated between May 1981 and February 1985, in ten of which arthroscopy was performed at the time of removal of instruments.All fractures achieved union. Recurrent depression occurred in 5 fractures. Deformity of the knee occurred in 4 cases; varus in 2 cases, valgus in 2 cases respectively.Functional results were investigated by Sandaigaku scoring criteria. 13 cases were graded as good, 6 cases as poor.In arthroscopic examination in 10 cases, no erosion nor defect of the joint cartilage was found regardless of the functional results.The functional results of comminuted type fractures in 2 cases were poor. Both varus deformity of the knee and chronic synovitis caused poor functional results. Neither valgus deformity of the knee nor recurrent depression of the fractures appeared to influence the functional results.
