Out of 61 cases of open fractures of the tibial shaft, 13 cases with extensive soft tissue damage were treated by external fixation with Hoffmann's device for the past 4 years from 1982 to 1985.Six cases with soft tissue damage of Campbell's type 2 healed without further bone operation except one, at an average of 12.2 (6 to 16) weeks.Seven cases of Campbell's type 3 all required the secondary bone operation. with an average of 27 (16 to 36) weeks of healing period.
