The tibial shaft fracture is the most usual fracture of the long bones. Many methods of treatment of the tibial shaft fracture have been reported, which are cast immobilization, P. T. B. brace, plate fixation, intramedullary nailing, etc. The closed Ender nailing is the most useful method of them.Since July 1982, 20 patients with the tibial shaft fracture were treated with Ender nailing, 11 were male and 9 were female, and their ages ranged from 11 to 87 years. There were 3 fractures in the proximal third of the tibial shaft, 5 in middle third and 14 in the distal third. Postoperation, in principle, the patient was not immobilized in casts, allowed full weight-bearing without brace at two weeks and discharged from hospital at four weeks. It has been our experience that advantages of Ender nailing are relative ease of nailing, good fixation and alignment of the fracture fragment without periosteal stripping, no necessity of external fixation postoperatively, early full weight-bearing, and decrease the duration of hospitalization.
