With the recent advancements and spread in the technique of arthroscopic surgery, the area of its application is widening from the knee to the small joints, because of the reduced surgical insult, without postoperative rehabilitation. We have performed this procedure on the ankle joints since 1986 and good results have been achieved. All five cases were as follows: osteochondroma, three cases; subchondral fracture of the talus, one case; foreign body (a piece of broken glass) in the joint, one case. They were operated with antero-lateral and anteromedial approaches using arthroscopes of 30°C and 70°C angles of inclination and 4mm in diameter. We performed enucleation for osteochondroma and a foreign body in the joint, and ablation chondroplasty for subchondral fracture of the talus. The patients recovered as walking by themselves only one day after surgery. All cases achieved good results and returned to social activity soon with arthroscopic surgery for the ankle joint.
