In respect to occurrence of the femoral head lesions in SHR, the influence of the weight-bearing was studied histologically. For this experiment, one side of hind-limbs in 6 SHR at 6 weeks after birth were amputated below the knee. Thereafter SHR were kept in ordinary rat cages. The bilateral femurs of SHR were extracted at 15 weeks of age, and thin coronal sections of the proximal femurs were stained with hematoxylin-eosin.The retardation of epiphyseal ossification (3 of the 6 femoral heads) and avascular necrosis (2 of the 6 femoral heads) were frequently seen in the femoral heads of non-amputated side, while the femoral heads in amputated side showed normal epiphyseal ossification and no avascular necrosis. It suggests that the weight-bearing in the hip joint of SHR closely takes part in the occurrence of the epiphyseal ossification disturbance and avascular necrosis in the femoral heads.
