A study of the treatment of femoral shaft fractures in children under 6 years of age.

Twenty-nine children under 6 years with a femoral shaft fractures were treated between 1982 and 1988 in our hospital, Growth accerelation, potential for remodeling and angular deformity were evaluated.Road traffic accidents caused the fracture in 23 patients (80%); 13 suffered head trauma including consciousness disorder in 4.Twenty-eight of the patients were treated conservatively using femoral skeletal traction in 16, skin traction in 11, and cast immobilization in 1.As a result of this study, skeletal traction, younger children and upper third fractures of the femur were associated with a large angular deformity in both anteroposterior and lateral planes on xRay.The method and direction of traction should be employed with great care, and watchful observation is necessary for the duration of the traction, especially in younger children.
