Surgical Treatment of the Knee in Cerebral Palsy.

We reported the results of surgical treatment of the knee in cerebral palsy. Release of the flexors, extensors, and combined release of the flexors and extensors were performed to treat such disorders as flexion or extension deformities of the knee, toe-in gait, ipsilateral hip dislocation, genu recurvatum, and rigidity of the knee.Forty-three cases with sixty-two knees, thirty-two men and eleven women, were reviewed. The mean age at operation was 12.2 (range from 3 to 40) and the average follow-up period was 2 years and 1 month (range from 6 months to 6 years).Release of the flexors in flexion deformity of the knee and release of the extensors showed almost good results. Combined release of the flexors and extensors was mainly performed for patients who had toe-in gait and hip dislocation. Toe-in gait remained unchanged, but hip dislocation and other disorders were managed well. Genu recurvatum, which had been annoying after release of the flexors, was infrequent after combined release of the flexors and extensors.
