The purpose of this study is to evaluate the results of surgery for patients with full thickness rotator cuff tears. We have used either McLaughlin's procedure, arthroscopic arthroplasty or open debridement. The operations were composed of cuff repairs, acromioplasty and resection of coraco-acromial ligament:Patients were 10 females and 9 males, ranging in age from 55 to 76 years (mean: 64 years). Therapeutic efficacy was evaluated using the Japan Orthopaedic Association's criteria for the shoulder. The average score at follow-up was 91 and score of arthroscopic surgery was 95.6 respectively. The good results were related the size of the rotator cuff tear, and the arthroscopic surgery group gained a better score. Our indications for arthroscopic surgery included patients over 65 years old, whose forward flexion could be relieved by a procaine test, and has had pain which did not improve with conservative therapy for longer than 6 months.
