Treatment of Fractures of the Calcaneus.

We investigated the type and clinical results following treatment of calcaneal fractures. We studied 36 patients (43 fractures) treated at Sasebo General Hospital between 1984 and 1993.Subjects were divided into extra-articular and intra-articular fractures. We further classified intra-articular fractures into two types, according to Soeur's criteria. These were compression types and rotation types. There were 25 rotation types, 12 compression types, 5 extra-articular fractures, and 1 anterior process fracture.We performed open reduction and fixation using a K-wire for 24 rotation-type intra-articular fractures, and 23 of these fractures had no severe pain and no disability.We suggest that anatomical reduction of the posterior talo-calcaneal joint surface is important in the treatment of calcaneal fractures.
