The first purpose of this study was to examine the effects of sex and birth-order on the magnitude of expression of “Amae”which was conceptualized by T. Doi (1971). The second purpose was to examine the effects of Amae on interpersonal emotions and the conflict-solution strategies in the hypothetical interpersonal conflict situations. In study I, the measurement scale of Amae developed by Fujihara & Kurokawa (1981) was administrated to 49 male and 67 female university students. Although there found no difference in the total magnitude of Amae between male students and females, Amae expressed toward lovers and intimate friends were greater in females than males. Furthermore, the birth-order had no effect on the individual difference in Amae. However, the last-born subjects expressed greater Amae toward the siblings than the first-born subjects. In study II, 27 male and 82 female subjects were asked to rate the interpersonal-emotion scales and the conflict-solution strategies scales in the six hypothetical interpersonal conflict situations. It were found that the magnitude of Amae had significant effects on the interpersonal emotions and the conflict-solution strategies. These findings were discussed in terms of the theoretical frameworks of the “Amae”proposed by Doi.
