The present instalment of this article deals with the question of how fibers are entangled by cylinder rotations if the cylinder surfaces of Mason type machine are finished in degree ΔΔ of roughness and pasted with emery papers of grid No.380C and nylon or cotton slivers are inserted between the two cylinders. How the fibers are entangled by the rotation of cylinders are researched.
If the cylinder surfaces are finished in degree ΔΔ of roughness, we can observe a number of buckled fibers in the sliver. Assuming that the sliver between the two cylinders is a viscous fluid, we can determine the relation between the buckling of fibers and the apparent viscosity of the sliver. As the fiber length increases, so the apparent viscosity of buckled fibers gets lower.
With emery paper pasted on the cylinder surfaces, we can observe by photography how the fibers in the sliver are buckled and entangled, and how the neighbouring fibers are connected and merge into a bigger fiber assembly.
