When a rayon staple fiber mat is acetylated, its upper layer tends to be acetylated sooner than the lower. To illustrate its mechanism, differential equations have been deduced by considering the supply and corsumption of the reacting material. By numerical calculation the following relation is obtained between the air velocity G (kg/m<SUP>2</SUP> min), the thickness ω (kg/m<SUP>2</SUP>) and the difference of acetylated moll fraction by up and low of the fiber mat Δ M:<BR> Δ M=0.415 P<SUB>g</SUB> (ω/G)<SUP>1.36</SUP><BR> where p<SUB>g</SUB>is the dencity of the reactant gas.<BR> Further, by the removing the reaction heat from the reacting fiber mat by reactant gas, another equation has been deduced :<BR> C (t<SUB>f</SUB>−t<SUB>g</SUB>) ⁄ AKm (C<SUB>p</SUB>G ⁄ C<SUB>s</SUB> ω)<SUP>m2</SUP> = t<SUB>m</SUB>(u) =Σ<SUB>n− 0</SUB> (−1)<SUP>n</SUP>Γ(m)u<SUP>m+n</SUP> ⁄(m+n+1)<BR> where<BR> u = (C<SUB>p</SUB> G θ⁄C<SUB>s</SUB> ω), <BR> c : specific heat of fiber (kcal/kg °C)<BR> A : reactant heat of completely acetylated fiber per cellulose 1 kg (kcal/kg)<BR> K, m : constant which permits reaction rate R to be expressed in R = Km θ <SUP>m-1</SUP><BR> C<SUB>p</SUB> : specific heat of reactant gas (kcal/kg °C)<BR> By analysing this formula from experimental data, we found that the relation between the actual temperature difference of the fiber mat, (t<SUB>f</SUB> − t<SUB>g</SUB>), and the temperature shown by a thermometer, (t<SUB>f</SUB> − t<SUB>g</SUB>)<SUB>T_??_</SUB> was<BR> (t<SUB>f</SUB>−t<SUB>g</SUB>) =1.50 (t<SUB>f</SUB> − t<SUB>g</SUB>)<SUB>T</SUB><SUP>1.08</SUP> <BR> Also the relation between the mass velocity of reactant gas theoretically calculated by the actual temperature difference, Gth, and the actual mass velocity, G, is<BR> Gth/ω=0.035 (G/ω)<SUP>1.36</SUP> on the removal of the reaction heat<BR> Gth/ω=0.013 (G/ω)<SUP>1.36</SUP> on the difference of acetylated moll fraction.<BR> Consequently, the relation between the maximum actural temperature difference of fiber mat, (t<SUB>f</SUB> − t<SUB>g</SUB>)<SUB>M</SUB> and G/ω, is:<BR> (t<SUB>f</SUB> − t<SUB>g</SUB>) =561 (ω/G)<SUP>1.22</SUP>
