The relation between the arrangement of the fiber leading ends and the variation of the thickness of slivers has been experimentally studied. The variation of the distribution of the fiber length along the sliver has also been investigated. These experimental studies show that the theoretical conclusions set forth in the previous paper may be applied in practice. Those conclusions were mainly as follows : (1) The relative variance of thickness and of the number of fibers in the cross-section are nearly equal to the relative variance of thenumber of fiber leading ends contained in a sliver whose length is equal to the mean fiber length <I>l</I>.(2) The relative variance of the number of fibers in the cross-section C<SUP>2</SUP>[S(x)] may be calculated by equation (3) . (3) In random slivers, C<SUP>2</SUP>[S(x)]=1/S. (4) A harmonic wave with wave length λ and the relative amplitude a in the variation of the density of the fiber leading ends causes a harmonic wave with wave length λ and the relative amplitude aγ(λ, <I>l</I>, σ) in the thickness variation. The two waves differ by φ(λ)(≅<I>l</I>/2) from each other in phase. (5) The random vriation in the arrangement of fiber leading ends may cause a wave variation of thickness in some parts of a sliver in which the wave length is about 2<I>l</I>. (6) In general, the fibers contained in those parts of slivers, where the thickness or density of fiber leading ends increases steeply are comparatively shorter than the fibers contained in other parts. However, the difference in mean length between these two groups is slight. For ordinary purposes, therefore, the variation in the distribution of the fiber length along slivers may be neglected.
