The purpose of this research is to find experimentally the frictional characteristics and the wear on various self-lubricating rings and travellers.
In other words, our purpose is to establish a foundamental rule for designing rings and travellers with the best proportions for spinning.
We have studied and compared various self-lubricating rings as to the wear, coefficient of friction between rings and travellers by varying the viscosity o lubricating oil and us in the ring traveller friction tester, The results show that :
(1) The wear of a ring has no effect on the viscosity of lubricating oil, but it has an effect on the type of ring: conical type OL ring (A) shows the lowest abrasive wear; conical type OM ring (C), the highest abrasive wear, Under steady wear bounds, an OL ring develops a clear tendency to a lower wear then does an OM ring.
(2) Wear of travellers has an effect on the viscosity of lubricating oil with lubricating mechanism :A conical type OL ring (A) shows the lowest abrasive ear and OL ring (B) the highest wear.
(3) The cceflicient of friction between rings and travellers has no effect on the viscosity of lubricating oil, but it has an effect on the type of ring : A conical type OL ring (A) shows the coefficient of friction and (B) shows the lowest.
