Organic content of faecal materials and its influence on the chemical composition of the bottom was investigated. The organic contents of faeces and pseudofaeces were nearly equal. The total range of organic nitrogen was 0.3-3.1%, with the large majority of samples falling between 0.4 and 1.5%, and the range of organic carbon was 2.6-20.0%, but generally between 3 and 12%. C/N ratios were between 6 and 10. The organic nitrogen content of the suspended matter, in the range of 0.8-5.0%, was about twice as much as and positively correlated with that of faecal materials. Faeces contained a large quantity of phaeophytin, whereas pseudofaeces contained little. This indicates that oysters preferably feed on microalgal cells. Faecal materials had several times more organic matter than bottom sediments; therefore, they could be expected to exert a great influence on bottom enrichment.
