In order to clarify the long-term effects of organotin compounds on marine fishes, saltwater goby Chasmichthys dolichognathus were exposed to various concentrations of bis (n-tributyltin) oxide (TBTO) for 4-24 weeks. Measured concentrations of TBTO in test water were about 50% of the nominal ones (0.21-4.2μg/l), and the bioconcentration factors of the fish were 800-6300. Twenty-four weeks' exposure to 2.1μg/l (measured concentration) of TBTO during the immature and the maturing period resulted in significant depression of both male and female GSI accompanied by distinct inhibition of spermatogenesis in the testes and suppression of yolk accumulation in the ovaries. Male GSIs were also depressed in other exposed groups although spermatogenesis was not apparently inhibited. Main histological changes observed at the end of the exposure were atrophy and necrosis of the hepatic cells, atrophy of the epithelium of the intestine, atrophy and disarrangement of the epiderm cells, and atrophy of the thymus.
