Metabolites of five sulfa drugs in the bile and urine were identified after oral administration to rainbow trout of sulfamerazine, sulfisoxazole, sulfadimethoxine, sulfamonomethoxine, and sulfisozole.Bile samples were withdrawn at 48h after administration while urine samples were collected continuously up to 72h. Separation of metabolites in the sample fluids were carried out by two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography on Silica Gel 60 F254 HPTLC plate. Reactions of Ehrlich, Tsuda, and naphthoresorcinol were then observed.Unchanged forms, N4-acetylated forms, and glucuronides of the all drugs examined were detected. In the bile samples after administration of sulfisoxazole, two kinds of glucuronide were detected. It is suggested that the sulfa drugs are mainly metabolized to N4-acetylated forms and glucu-ronides in rainbow trout.
