The distribution of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) in carp brains was studied by a specific radioimmunoassay (RIA). The carp brains were dissected into seven regions. From each region immunoreactive-TRH (IR-TRH) was extracted, purified, and assayed by the RIA. Prior to experiments, the specificity of TRH antisera produced in our laboratory was examined by RIA and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). These antisera were found to be highly specific. IR-TRH was present in all regions of carp brain. The highest level of IR-TRH was found in the olfactory bulb, and a higher level of IR-TRH was observed in the diencephalon, the pituitary, and the olfactory lobe. These results suggest that TRH has a certain physiological role not only in the endocrine system but also in the central nervous system, and may have a function in olfaction in particular.
