Effects of liming for the improvement of mariculture grounds were studied in a model system. Lime (CaO) increased pH of the sea water and consequently sulfide and ammonium ion were eluted from the bottom mud. Lime transmuted gradually into magnesium hydroxide as a result of the exchange fo Ca2+ for Mg2+. Lime and magnesium hydroxide efficiently inhibited the growth of sulfate-reducing bacteria for a long term, and accordingly the formation of hydrogen sulfide was reduced. Amount of lime required to prevent the formation of hydrogen sulfide in mariculture grounds was estimated to be 100-200g/m2. These results suggest that lime is an effective material for the improvement of mariculture grounds.
