When alloxan diabetic rabbits are subjected to the oral carbohydrate tolerance test before and during treatment with the mesoxalates, the glucose tolerance curve during treatment is lower than the pretreatment curve and takes a shorter time to return to the pre-feeding level. In the intravenous glucose tolerance test on alloxan diabetic dogs and rabbits before and during treatment with the mesoxalates, the fall of the blood sugar curve during treatment is sharper than that of the pre-treatment curve. Epinephrine-induced hyperglycemia in rabbits is checked by 1 week's continuous administration of the mesoxalates. When rabbits administered the mesoxalates continuously for 1 week are given an injection of alloxan, the incidence of hyperglycemic convulsions it brings on is twice that of the control group. It is reasoned that what accounts for the decrease or disappearance of glycosuria when diabetic animals are treated orally with the mesoxalates is the enhancement of carbohydrate tolerance of the animals.
