Cholesterol is an important biological substance which acts as the precursor of bile acids, vitamin D3, neutral lipids, and steroid hormones. It is equally important as a component of biological membranes. Current main topics in this area include the interaction of cholesterol with phospholipids, lateral diffusion of cholesterol in bilayer, trans- and inter-membrane movement of cholesterol, and the cholesterol availability for membrane-bound enzyme. In particular, hormone-induced activation of cytochrome P-450sco-dependent cholesterol side chain cleavage reactions were discussed in in terms of the transmembrane movement of cholesterol across the inner membrane of adrenocortical mitochondria.
