• This study was carried out to elucidate the status of death among tuberculosis patients in a certain area in Tokyo, because this problem has not yet been cleared up to now, although studies have been carried out repeatedly on causes of death in 138 national tuberculosis sanatoria throughout whole Japan.<BR>The material of this study consisted of 593 tuberculosis deaths and 184 non-tuberculous deaths experienced during the past 11 years period from January 1, 1962 to December 31, 1972, who had been registered as tuberculosis at the Tanashi Health Center (Table 1).<BR>This health center is located in the north-western part of Tokyo Metropolis, which is a typical suburban living area, and it covers Kiyose City with many tuberculosis sanatoria. The mortality rate of tuberculosis reported to this health center was higher than that of the whole Japan, however, it has been decreasing markedly if cases died in Kiyose City were excluded (Table 2).<BR>The deaths were found obviously more in the age groups from 30 to 59 years than that in the other age groups, and divided by sex, it was 67% for male and 33% for female (Table 3). Patients died most frequently in sanatoria other than the national sanatorium (48.4%) and next at home (13.1%). In the case of non-tuberculous death, however, many patients died in hospitals and at home (Table 4).<BR>The direct causes of tuberculosis deaths were most often cor pulmonale (44.1%), next general weakness (25.3%) and followed by hemoptysis (20.9%) (Table 5), while 61.4% of the direct causes of non-tuberculous deaths were occupied by degenerative diseases and neoplasma, in which malignant tumors were most often (35.3%), then followed by vascular lesions of central nervous system (13.6%) (Table 6).<BR>The proportion of patients registered as tuberculosis at the time of death to this halth center was 65.9%, and it was regarded as not sufficiently high (Table 7).
