EVALUATION OF THERAPEUTIC EFFECT OF SULFAMETHIZOLE ON PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS

In order to investigate the therapeutic effect of sulfamethizole (Urocidal), following experiments were done. Vertical diffusioh method was performed to evaluate serum antimycobacterial activity of experimental animal which was administered sulfamethizole: Ten rabbits received this drug intramuscularly singly or in combination with sulisoxazole, i soniazid or streptmycin. Thirty minutes later, blood was obtained by cardiac puncture. Each I ml. of serum separated from the blood was put into the bottom of the test tubes containing 1% Ogawa's media which had been inoculated with human virulent tubercle bacilli, H37Rv, its isoniazid-resistant and streptomycin-resistant strain, respectively. The antibacterial effect of the drugs in serum was determined by measuring the width of inhibitory zones on the vertical diffusion medium after 3 weeks incubation. In addition to vertical diffusion method, following animal experiments were performed: (1) 270 mice, strain CF-1 were divided into three groups of 90 mice. Each group was inoculated intravenously with tubercle bacilli H37Rv and its two drug resistant variants mentioned above, respectively. Each group was further divided into three subgroups. The first three of each subgroup received daily sulfamethizole alone. The second three and the third three received sulfamethizole with isoniazid and sulfamethizole with streptomycin, respectively. After three weeks treatment, all animals were sacrificed for gross and bacteriological ex amination.
