In recent years, the number of patients with bone and joint tuberculosis has been fairly decreasing because of improved preventive measures, widespread use of antituberculous chemotherapy, and better surgical treatment.<BR>In our Sanatorium which has been specialized in the treatment of bone and joint tuberculosis in Japan, however, there are still a lot of patients with bone and joint tuberculosis. The majority of these patients are hardly curable due to long-standing fistula with a large amount of pus discharge resulting from purulent mixed infection, severe pulmonary tuberculosis, severe kyphotic spinal deformity caused by spinal tuberculosis, and/or senile patients who are unable to conduct the radical operation for bone and joint tuberculosis because of age.
