Pulmonary Hilar Lymph-Node Enlargement Observed During the Past 15 Years. On the relation between tuberculosis and sarcoidosis

1) In recent 15 years, out of 144 cases of pulmonary hilar node enlargement of out-patients at the Daiichi Dispensary, there were 107 cases of tuberculosis, 22 cases of sarcoidosis and 15 cases of other diseases. 2) The 144 cases consisted of 65 cases of males and 79 cases of females. More cases of tuberculosis were found in women than in men, but in sarcoidosis there were 13 men and 9 women. 3) Before 1954, no cases of hilar node enlargement of 30 years of age or more had been observed, but after 1955, such cases have become to be observed. Out of 144 cases, 7 cases of 30 years of age or more have been observed. 4) Recently in cases of hilar node enlargement, one has become to observe some cases with a tuberculin reaction of 14 mm or less. 5) One has also become to observe an increase of cases of large hilar enlargement and of bilateral hilar enlargement. 6) With regard to tuberculous cases, one has not observed any difference of hilar node enlargement during the past years. 7) As a result of the above-mentioned facts, in Japan one reasonably appreciates that cases of pulmonary sarcoidosis or non-tuberculous cases of pulmonary hilar lymph-node enlargement have recently increased. In recent 3 years, there have been observed 30 cases of sarcoidosis per 100, 000 persons vis iting the dispensary.
