Reduction and fixation for maxillofacial fractures using acrylic resin splints.

In this paper, a new classification of acrylic resin splints to be used for the treatment of maxillofacial fracture was proposed. This classification was based mainly on the state of remaining teeth, which are important for the restoration of occlusion. The classification includes intermaxillary-, lingual-, and buccolingual-type splints which hold dental arch in addition to a splint covering dental arch.<BR>The indications of these types are as follows: Intermaxillary type is applied for multiple teeth defect cases, lingual type for cases with suspected intraversion of bone fragment and bucco- lingual type and covering type for cases with deciduous or mixed dentition.<BR>When these type splints were used in our 43 patients according to this classification, successful results could be obtained. In addition, the usefulness of these acrylic resin splints as intraoral apparatus was discussed.
