On the Bearing Properties of the Water Lubricating Stern Tube Bearing by means of Model Tests

In recent tendency on marine stern tube bearing especially for the large ships an oil lubrication method with white metal, capable of excellent bearing load, is used generally instead of conventional water lubrication system with lignumvitae. But on oil lubrication method, there are some unknown factors on reliability of it, because the practical experience has been rather brief since adoption for marine.<BR>Thereupon the tests of model bearing 123mm in diameter are made to redevelop the high quarity water lubricating bearing. This tests include those the re-examine of conventional water lubricating bearing, lignumvitae and phenol resin bearing having same form, and examine of two new designed models. The following results are made from these tests.<BR>1. On the Lignumvitae bearing, good character is shown as far as circumstance of actualy adopted on ship. The coefficient of friction μ of the model is shown as follow.<BR>μ=11/<I>N</I>√<I>P</I><BR><I>N</I>: number of revolution, rpm<BR><I>P</I>: bearing pressure, kg/cm<SUP>2</SUP><BR>2. It is shown the phenol resin bearing, same form with lignumvitae, has nature of distinct seizure under the some test conditions. The critical condition of seizure is shown as follow.<BR><I>V</I>= 4.95×10<SUP>-5</SUP> (<I>U/P<SUP>2</SUP></I>) <SUP>-2.33</SUP> <I>V</I>: ratio of cooling water <I>l</I>/min/mm in diameter<BR><I>U</I>: speed of surface m/s<BR>3. A new designed multi-hole type bearing of phenol resin (Fig. 21), in expection of successful cooling and lubrication by water, is made. The results of tests has same inclinations with conventional phenol resin bearing, but the nature of anti-seizing is improved.<BR>4. A new designed rubber lined type bearing of phenol resin, in expection of flexibility of deforme and equalizing the distribution of the bearing reaction, is made. The nature of antiseizing is further improved as shown in Fig. 33.
