Cooling Effects of "Cocktail Shaker" System on Pistons

Although the cocktail shaker cooling of pistons have commonly been applied in high powered diesel engines, the evaluating method of the convective heat transfer rate between the piston surface and the cooling medium has not satisfactorily been made clear.<BR>In order to get nondimentional explanations for the convective heat transfer, this experimental study was carried out by using a test rig which was able to apply simple and basic plane surface pistons with various cavity conditions so as to simulate operating conditions of diesel engines.<BR>As the result, in the case of pure cocktail shaker cooled pistons (without any jet or speed cooling coexistence), the nondimentional explanation for the heat transfer was given as a straight line for various cooling mediums such as, engine oil, , spindle oil and water, so that the mean heat transfer rate was able to show by very convenient form.
