Usefulness of the CPITN as a screening for periodontal disease.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the CPITN (Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs) in screening for periodontal disease.<BR>Two thousand two hundred and twenty eight university freshmen (1, 501 males and 727 females, 18.6±1.4 yrs.) participated in this study. The periodontal health of the students was assessed by using the CPITN. About 98% of them suffered from periodontal disease in various degrees.<BR>Seventy-eight students chosen at random out of the total 2, 228 received thorough clinical and radiographic examinations. Severe periodontal disease was defined clinically as pus discharge, mobile teeth, and alveolar bone loss and then the CPITN was compared with the clinical diagnosis. The sensitivity and the specificity of the screening test were calculated, assuming the CPITN Codes 3 and 4 to be positive. The sensitivity was 0.46 and the specificity was 0.84. However, only 46% of the actually affected students were identified by these codes.<BR>These results indicate that the CPITN is not useful in screening for severe periodontitis.
