In the first report, it was reported that daily fluoride mouth-rinsing with a weak solution significantly inhibited dental caries. It was suggested that the interaction of fluoride ion in a system"Saliva[or Rinsing Solution]-Plaque-Surface Enamel"was the caries inhibition mechanism. In the present paper, therefore, fluoride uptake into surface enamel and dental plaque from mouth-rinsing with a weakly acid[pH 5.0]NaF solution[100ppm F]was investigated.<BR>The present study was carried out in the same two elementary schools as the first report: school A children were the fluoride rinsing group and school B children were the control group. School B children had the same dental health program except for fluoride rinsing as school A children.<BR>The results may be summarized as follows:<BR>1. A significant positive correlation was found between the rinsing period and the fluoride content in enamel of exfoliated deciduous teeth.<BR>2. A significant positive correlation was also obtained between the rinsing period and the fluoride content of the surface enamel of the upper right permanent central incisor, through biopsy with acid.<BR>3. In the fluoride treatment group, the fluoride content in dental plaque was 1.5 times greater than in the control group.<BR>4. In the entire fluoride treatment group, a consistently positive correlation was found between the quantity (dry weight) and fluoride content of dental plaque.<BR>5. In the fluoride treatment group, an inverse association was demonstrated between fluoride content in dental plaque and DMFS index.<BR>From these results, it may be suggested that the dental plaque plays some role in the prevention of dental caries in fluoride mouth-rinsing, especially as a reservoir of the fluoride ion.
