Methods for direct measurement of some morphological features of the occlusal surface of human permanent molar teeth were developed in this study.<BR>We modified the measuring attachments of cylinder gauges used for industrial purposes to "Occlusal surface depth gauge" and "Opening angle gauge of pit area" (Figs. 1, 2 and 3). 297 children of grades 1, 2, and 3 of two elementary schools in Miyagi prefecture participated in this study. First permanent molars which had no caries on the occlusal pit area were selected and measured using the gauges (Table 1). The data are summarized in Tables 2 and 3. The mean occlusal surface depth in boys was larger than in girls, and that of upper molars was larger than in the lower molars with a statistically significant difference. When we compared the mean opening angles of pit area according to sex and jaw, that of the upper molars was larger than in the lower molars at a statistically significant level in both sexes. In lower molars, the mean opening angle in girls was smaller than in boys with a statistically significant difference. But in the upper molars, no difference was seen between the sexes. A statistically significant level of negative correlation was detected between the occlusal surface depth and the opening angle of the pit area in upper molars in both sexes. But in lower molars, significant correlations were not detected (Table 4).<BR>As the opening angle of the pit area becomes smaller, the self-cleaning action of this area will probably be reduced. Therefore, it is an important discovery that the caries susceptible first permanent molar of the lower jaw has a narrower opening angle of the pit area than the upper one.
