The applicability of co-oxidation technique was investigated in a propylene glycol-diethylene glycol cultivation system inoculated with bacterium isolated from soil. Diethylene glycol, which could not be utilized for growth by the microorganism, was converted β-hydroxyethoxy acetic acid in the presence of propylene glycol as a substrate for growth. The cultivation was carried out in a 10-liter jar fermenter with 5 liters of the mineral medium containing propylene glycol (1.0%), diethylene glycol (2.0%) and yeast extract (0.01%) at 30°C. Under these co-oxidation culture conditions, 100% of the molar conversion ratio of diethylene glycol into β-hydroxyethoxy acetic acid was obtained after 3 days of cultivation. The maximum conversion rate to β-hydroxyethoxy acetic acid was approximately 0.7g/liter•hr.
