Hypoxanthine, xanthine and uric acid were detected as additional products of γ-irradiated (60 mega rad) nitrogen saturated aqueous solution of cytosine (3.6×10-2M) using paper chromatographic separation and UV spectrometry, and/or gas-liquid chromatography following the trimethylsilylation of the residue obtained by freeze drying of the test solution. It was presumed that these compounds were formed by recombination of the primary radiolytic products. Mechanism of uric acid formation was confirmed by γ-irradiation of the mixture containing urea, 5- and 6-hydroxyuracil.
