When a boundary is formed between the "solvent, " that is, a mixture of solvent and nonsolvent, and the "solution, " composed of the solvent mixture and a polymer, in which, due to the selective adsorption by the polymer, the concentration of solvent is lower than in the original solvent mixture, then the solvent diffuses rapidly through the boundary of polymer, and one can observe the selective adsorption directly as a schlieren pattern having a depression or a projection around the boundary. This process was applied to the starch solution, containing dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and NH4SCN, and it was found that those are strongly adsorbed by starch in solutions. Further examination on the various salt solutions showed that the tendency for anion to be adsorbed by starch follows the lyotropic series. The degree of solvation of amylopectin in the solvent mixtures composed of DMSO-dioxane, and of water-dimethylformamide, were measured ultracentrifugally according to Sitohla-Svedberg method. Thus the solvation number of amylopectin in the solution, was estimated to be ca. 3 DMSO molecule per glucosic residue, suggesting that the hydroxyl groups take part in the solvation process, and the hydration of amylopectin was ca. 6 water molecule per glucosic residue, being twice as much as DMSO.
