(1) Successful methods are described for determination of organic acids in tobacco. (a) Oxalic acid was determined either by KISSLING's (gravimetric) or HALLIWELL's (micro-titrimetric) method as shown in Table 1. (b) Malic acid was determined by LEININGER's (fluorometric) method as shown in Table 2. (c) Citric acid was determined either by HARTMANN's (gravimetric) or NATERSON's (colorimetric) method as shown in Table 5. (2) In the separation and identification of organic acids, the paper-chromatographic method was applied to both cured and uncured tobacco leaves, there were citric, malic, lactic, malonic, succinic and one unknown acid (RF: 0.77, with solvent A, RF: 0.86, with B, RF: 0.80, with C, ). As aromatic acids, caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid were identified in both types of leaves. Fumaric acid was detected in slight quantity in cured tobacco leaves.
