In the first part of this series the present authors have reported that, when sawdust was oxidized by Na-m-nitrobenzensulphonate in alkaline medium to get vanillin, the yield of vanillin increased, if SeO2 was added to the the reaction solution, and that this fact was most likely attributed to the catalytic action of SeO2. In the later experiments, however, it was found that the metallic material of. which the auto-clave was made reacted with alkali and lowered the yield of vanillin. Accordingly the spec-iality of SeO2 might be due to the following causes, i.e. SeO2 reacted with the metallic material of the autoclave to result an insoluble substance which covered over the inside surface of the metal of the autoclave and hindered the dissolution of the metal. The metal which lowered the yield might chiefly be Pb. The poisoning power of several metals examined against the yield of vanillin was in the following series, (from large to small) namely, Sn>Zn>Pb>Fe>Cu>Ni. Cu and Ni showed no poisoning action. When pure Na-m-nitrobenzene sulphonate was used, the yield of vanillin was always better in comparison with the result of the experiment in which Na-m-nitrobenzene sulphonate of 60%, purity is used.
